Field Trip: African Burial Ground
November 4, 2021
On Thursday, November 4, 2021, the 1619 Project and Facing Ferguson classes visited the African Burial Ground, the oldest and largest known excavated burial ground in North America for both free and enslaved Africans. A national park that was brought to fruition by community activism, the burial ground, memorial and museum educate the public on the historic role slavery had in building New York and the United States.
Hermayoli said: "What I learned about the African Burial Ground trip, it was a trip filled of cultural events and emotional and physical events that lead up to who we are today. It has taught us that our ancestors suffered to make America great and don’t get enough credit. They were beaten brutality and the life they were born into was not even their choice to make. They were born into this and some died this way. The declaration of independence written wouldn’t have been true without them. We wouldn’t have the rights we have today. They had to go through so much and are still not treated with enough respect. I feel like yes the Museum is amazing but all the sacrifices they went through this is not enough respect and appreciation."
